This is great news for anyone who has relatives and ancestors in Northeast Arkansas! I've been to the Powhatan Historic State Park and it's a beautiful area.
The grand opening of the Northeast Arkansas Regional Archives was held Thursday in Powhatan. Located on the grounds of the Powhatan Historic State Park, the facility came to be through a collaboration between Arkansas State Parks and the Arkansas History Commission, with assistance from the Lawrence County Historical Society.
For members of the Lawrence County Historical Society, it represented a long-awaited homecoming for records that have been in the society's care for many years.

ReplyDeleteI'm not actually from Arkansas, just passing through on a military tour. I'm from Missouri, but I love this state and we have really enjoyed our time here. I did have two ancestors that fought in civil war battles here, though: Pea Ridge and Arkansas Post. Are you a member of any societies in the central Little Rock area? I've been thinking of joining one, but haven't had a chance to try them out.

ReplyDeleteI'm a member of the Johnson Co. Historical Society which is where most of my family originated in Arkansas. I SHOULD also join the Faulkner Co. Historical Society, but haven't yet.
I haven't ever participated in the Little Rock stuff, although the downtown library and the Butler Center usually have amazing programs and info! In fact, the Butler Center does a lot of genealogical workshops and seminars, but they tend to always be at lunchtime during the week. Since I work full-time, it'd be hard to get to LR for those.

There is a fairly new Central Arkansas Genealogy and Historical Society. They meet every second Thursday at 6pm at the Butler Center. I have not been able to attend yet, but hope to catch their April meeting. You can check out their webpage at: http://caghs.net/
